I’ve often heard that lighting is like the jewelry of interior design, and I couldn’t agree more. It’s those thoughtful details that truly make a house feel like a home.

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about lighting, especially with our ongoing rental apartment renovation and the upcoming build of our new home. In both cases, my goal is to source lighting that is timeless—fixtures that won’t need to be replaced any time soon, ensuring both functionality and enduring style.

For our rental apartment renovation, I want our future tenants to appreciate and enjoy the space, which means avoiding basic, builder-grade flush mount lights and instead opting for budget-friendly yet stylish options. While I don’t want to overspend, I also recognize the importance of choosing fixtures that enhance the overall look and feel of the apartment.

In our new home build, the approach will be slightly different. Here, I’m willing to invest more in statement lighting pieces that will be prominent and help set the mood for each space. While I aim to keep most fixtures timeless and classic, there are certain areas where a splurge on a standout light fixture is justifiable to create a stunning impact.

I can already picture in my mind a charming lantern pendant in our future front hall, giving off a warm glow over an inviting bench, a classic mirror, and beautiful hardwood floors. It will create a welcoming, timeless feel for our guests and set the tone for our lake home.

When it comes to lighting, I always prioritize timeless finishes. Trends come and go, and while I appreciate a trendy piece now and then, I don’t want to incorporate too many fixtures that I’ll tire of quickly.

For my main lighting fixtures, I aim for pieces that are both attractive and enduring and of course most importantly functional.

Depending on the location, I don’t mind if a fixture makes a statement, but I do lean towards timeless shapes and finishes to create a cohesive and lasting backdrop.

One of my favourite decorating teachers and renowned colour expert Maria Killam talks about creating an “envelope” with neutral or timeless finishes and then adding in decorative elements that are less of a financial commitment. This approach ensures your space remains stylish and adaptable.

I tend to look for clean lines and simple shapes, as they can complement various decor styles effortlessly.

3. Does it provide the necessary lighting for the space? Does it provide adequate lighting for its intended use, whether it’s ambient, task, or accent lighting.

4. Will it blend with your home’s evolving decor styles? Choosing a timeless light fixture ensures it will still look great 10 years from now, even if you change your furniture or decor.

5. Does it have a neutral finish that won’t go out of style? Neutral finishes like polished nickel, aged iron, unlacquered brass, white or matte black are timeless and unlikely to go out of style, ensuring the fixture remains relevant over the years.

Our New Home Build Inspiration:

For our new home build, which is inspired by the classic Nantucket style home, I’m considering a beautiful, timeless lantern pendant for the entryway. This style of fixture has clean lines and a classic design that complements the Nantucket aesthetic perfectly.

For the wall sconces in our living room, I’m looking at simple, elegant candelabra style fixtures with pretty white shades that add a touch of sophistication without overwhelming the space.

And for the pendants over the kitchen island I can imagine a striking pair of lacquered brass fixtures with glass globe shades to make a statement.

When To Save on a Light Fixture:

There are times when budget-friendly options are not only appropriate but also wise. In spaces like our rental apartment or for secondary rooms in your home, saving on light fixtures can free up budget for other essential areas.

These are spaces where you spend a lot of time and entertain guests, so it’s worth choosing fixtures that not only look beautiful but also provide the right lighting.

This approach ensures that the lighting not only serves a functional purpose but also adds to the aesthetic value of your home.
