Timeless Style Meets Trends: Easy Ways to Update Your Home and Closet

Style & Design

November 28, 2024

I’ve always been drawn to timeless style. There’s just something about having those classic pieces that you know will always look good—whether it’s a cozy grey turtleneck sweater, a favorite navy peacoat, or a well-loved piece of furniture.

Recently, though, I found myself tempted by a trend I kept seeing everywhere: wide-leg, high-waisted jeans. I couldn’t help but wonder if they’d be a fun addition to my wardrobe.

At first, I wasn’t sure. Do I really want to jump on a trend? Would it fit with the timeless look I’ve tried to stick with over the years? Then I thought, why not “tread lightly” and just dip my toes in? So, I went for it and paired the jeans with my go-to grey turtleneck and navy peacoat. The outfit felt like the perfect mix of classic and fresh. It was a fun update but still totally me.

That got me thinking about how I’m approaching our new home build. Just like with my wardrobe, I’m being really intentional about picking timeless finishes for the house. I want to choose things like paint colors, flooring, and fixtures that are going to look good for a long time—not just because trends come and go, but because these big purchases are investments.

I want to feel good about these choices for years to come, just like I do with my tried-and-true pieces in my closet.

Tread Lightly When It Comes to Trends

I read this phrase—“Tread lightly when it comes to trends”—in one of my favorite books on style, “Parisian Chic: A Style Guide” by Ines de la Fressange.

It’s such a smart approach, and it’s not just about fashion; it’s true for home decorating too.

The idea is to embrace trends in small ways, bringing them in without letting them take over your whole style.

Trends can be fun, but they shouldn’t overshadow the classic pieces that make you feel confident and grounded.

And let’s be real—when it comes to your home, the stakes are higher. Furniture, finishes, and decor often cost a lot more, so it’s worth being extra thoughtful about what you’re spending on. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a little trendiness here and there. It just means you should pick and choose where you want to bring in those trendy touches.

So, let me show you how to decide when to lean into a trend and when to stick with timeless.

Easy Ways to Update Your Home and Closet While Keeping It Timeless

1. Incorporate Trends in Small Doses

For Your Wardrobe: Start with just one trendy piece and mix it with the timeless staples you already love. Think of trends as accents rather than the main event. Like, if you’re trying out a bold color or pattern, try it with an accessory like a scarf or a handbag. This way, you get a little bit of that trendy flair without feeling like you’re stepping too far away from your usual style.

For Your Home: The same idea goes for decorating. Use trends in small, easy-to-change ways like with throw pillows, artwork, or a fun new rug. These little updates can keep things feeling fresh without a big commitment. Plus, when your tastes change or the trend moves on, it’s a lot easier to swap out a pillow than it is to redo an entire room.

2. Invest in Timeless Quality for the Bigger Stuff

For Your Wardrobe: When it comes to bigger purchases—like a coat, handbag, or good pair of boots—go for the classic styles that never go out of fashion. These are the pieces that form the foundation of your wardrobe, just like paint colors, flooring, or cabinets do in your home.

It’s worth it to invest in quality for these, because you’ll keep reaching for them, year after year.

For Your Home: Think of your home’s foundation—like the flooring, countertops, or kitchen cabinets—as the equivalent of a classic wardrobe staple. Pick things you know you’ll love for the long haul. The trendy stuff can come in through decorative accents that don’t cost as much or require a big renovation when you want a change.

3. Choose Trends That Fit Your Style Naturally

For Your Wardrobe: Not all trends will feel right, and that’s okay! Stick with the ones that fit your vibe. For instance, if you love classic looks, try out trends that have a bit of a retro feel or vintage inspiration. That way, they’ll blend seamlessly with the timeless pieces you already have.

For Your Home: Do the same when decorating. If your style leans more toward neutral tones and cozy textures, look for trends that add something soft and inviting, like natural materials or subtle patterns. This way, the trend adds to your existing style instead of clashing with it.

Why It Pays to Keep a Timeless Style in Mind

When you focus on timeless style, you’re doing more than just making your home or wardrobe look nice—you’re simplifying your life. You’re cutting down on the decision fatigue that comes with constantly feeling like you need to keep up.

With a timeless approach, you can add in a trend here and there, but your foundation stays steady and consistent. That means less second-guessing and more confidence in the choices you’re making.

Embrace Trends with Confidence

So go ahead, have a little fun with trends—just tread lightly. It’s about finding that balance between classic and trendy that feels right for you. Whether you’re adding a trendy piece to your outfit or trying out a new home decor look, you can enjoy the best of both worlds without compromising your style.
