Window Shopping: Why the Right Colour Can Make or Break Your Home Design!

Home Build Journey

January 23, 2025

When we started our new home build journey, I never imagined that one of our first major decisions would be about windows. But here we are, and it’s both exciting and a little overwhelming!

After finalizing our design plans, we’ve settled on casement-style windows for most of our home. These windows are hinged on the side and open outward with a crank, making them perfect for maximizing ventilation and maintaining unobstructed views. For areas where we don’t need the windows to open, we’re incorporating picture windows, which are fixed and allow for even more expansive views of the lake.

These gorgeous double hung windows with grilles are so classic and timeless but could impede our lake view!

At first though, I was leaning towards double-hung windows to achieve the Nantucket-inspired aesthetic I love and want to replicate. However, the dilemma with that style is that the rail where the upper and lower sections of the window meet could impede our view of the lake. With lake views being our priority, fewer divisions were the way to go!

Ultimately, we decided that casement windows would be the best choice for maximizing the stunning lake views while still embracing the timeless charm of an American traditional home. To capture the classic style I admire, we included divided light grilles in the transoms at the top of the windows. The grilles are positioned high enough that even my 6’6” tall son won’t have to look through them to enjoy the view!

These Fixed (aka Picture) style windows with white grilles by Kohltech Windows are what we’re using for our great room to look out at the lake.

The thoughtful detail of the grilles not only frames the windows beautifully but also adds that classic, more traditional Nantucket-inspired aesthetic I’ve always admired. It’s the perfect blend of practicality and style, ensuring the lake remains the star of the show while our windows add character and charm to the home’s design.

But as we began to research window companies, I’ve realized there’s soooooo much more to consider than just the style.

The Devil’s in the Details

We’re looking at little things like lock options and metal handles for raising the windows. But you know what really threw me for a loop? The window colour could actually impact our cabinet and trim choices throughout the entire house! I can almost hear you asking, “Rose, how on earth does the window colour affect all that?” Well, my friends, let me tell you – it’s all about the undertones!

I always have my Maria Killam Neutral Colour Wheel on hand for my neutral decorating decisions!

The Tricky World of White

Here’s a little tidbit from my colour expert training with Maria Killam: white is one of the trickiest colours to choose. Why? Because there are so many different whites out there, each with its own unique undertone. From cool blue-whites, to warm creamy whites, and everything in between.

For our home, we want white windows, inside and out. But we’re steering clear of those cool blue white windows because we’re aiming for a warm, cozy vibe with warm white cabinetry and trim. It’s all about creating a cohesive look that flows throughout the house.

Here are some examples of popular “warm” white colours and “cool” white colours to illustrate what I mean.

How the Undertone of a White Window Affects Aesthetics

The undertones of your white windows can significantly impact your home’s overall aesthetic in several ways:

Colour Harmony and Flow

Creating a cohesive look in your home starts with the details—and your window frames are a big one. When you’re choosing windows, it’s important to think about the colour you’ll be painting the trim that will eventually surround those windows. Will it be a warm white, a true white, or a cool white? Your window frames should complement that trim colour to ensure a seamless, harmonious look.

But it doesn’t stop there. Consider how your window trim colour ties into other neutrals in your home, like kitchen cabinets, countertops, or even flooring. Mixing warm and cool undertones in these finishes can make a space feel disconnected, rather than cohesive. That’s why deciding on the undertones for your interior finishes—warm, cool, or neutral—right from the start is so important. Choose window frames that complement not just the trim but also the overall palette of your home, and you’ll create a flow that feels intentional and beautifully put together!

An example of what you’d like to avoid. Cool white window or door against warm white or cream trim. Can you see the difference in the undertones?

Impact on Other Design Elements

Window undertones influence how other colours will appear in your space. The wrong undertone can be something that bothers you for years to come. For instance, say you have warm neutral walls or cabinetry. If you put too cool a white or true white against that it might make the walls or cabinets look dingy or dirty. Or say you have a modern cool white aesthetic but put warm white window frames in this space – it will be the windows that might end up looking dirty and old! Selecting window frames that will complement your other undertones helps maintain a harmonious backdrop for your furnishings, paint colours and fixed decorating elements.

Exterior Aesthetics

Don’t forget about curb appeal! The undertones of your windows should complement your home’s exterior colour scheme and architectural style. The right choice enhances visual interest and ties together various exterior elements.

That Was A Close Call!

Each window company will have its own version of white, often referred to as their “Standard” or “Factory” white. So it’s crucial to see this colour in person to ensure it complements both your interior and exterior finishes. Yes, I know—it feels like you’re being asked to make all your white decisions for your home ridiculously early in the build process. But trust me, it’s worth it to get this right!

If you’re dreaming of warm white kitchen cabinets and walls, like Benjamin Moore’s “White Dove,” steer clear of windows in a cool white tone. On the other hand, if a sleek, cool white interior is your vision, then cooler-toned window frames will be the way to go.

Here’s a designer tip: When you go window shopping, take a selection of white paint chips with you and hold them up to the window frames. I brought along Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly Lace (a true white), White Dove and Cloud White (warm whites), and White Ice (a cool blue-white) to compare. This helped me see how the Standard white from each window company measured up against my desired finishes.

Thankfully, many window manufacturers also offer custom frame colours, so you’re not stuck with their Factory white if it doesn’t work for your design. As luck would have it, the window company we’re going with—Kohltech Windows—has a Standard white that’s a warmer white. Major win for us—phew!

Now, imagine if we had rushed into ordering the first white windows we saw without considering this. We could have ended up with cool blue undertone windows that would completely clash with our warm interior finishes. Talk about a design disaster! And that’s why I always recommend SLOWING DOWN AND TAKING YOUR TIME to get these early decisions just right.

Black Windows: A Bold Choice, But Will They Stand the Test of Time?

It would be remiss of me to talk about window colours without also talking about black windows as they are extremely popular these days to say the least! They’ve been everywhere in recent years especially with the Modern Farmhouse trend and can make a bold statement. The good news is that black windows certainly eliminate the issue of “undertone” but it’s worth thinking about whether this trend aligns with your long-term vision for your home.

Personally, I’m not a huge proponent of black frames, especially on the interior, unless you’re designing a modern or industrial-style space. To me, they don’t read as timeless in most settings and can feel a little heavy over time. If you’re building or renovating with the goal of creating a warm, classic, or transitional aesthetic, black might not be the best fit. On the exterior, however, I admit they can add a striking contrast, particularly against lighter-coloured siding.

This simple thin black window frame on the interior suits certain styles best such as the modern farmhouse style.

Ultimately, the decision comes down to the STYLE of your home and whether black suits that style, and of course your personal taste, as it is your home. Trends come and go, but a cohesive, thoughtfully designed home will always stand the test of time. Just don’t rush the decision as you will be living with it for MANY MANY years to come! Will you love that black in ten years? If so, great! If you’re not sure, perhaps go with the safer option of white.

Lessons Learned for our New Home Build

This experience of window shopping has been such a valuable reminder of why it’s crucial to think through every decision in a home build or renovation. Whether you’re choosing windows, furniture, countertops, or a new vanity, remember:

  1. Anything white or neutral will have an undertone.
  2. Those undertones need to complement the other finishes in your space.
  3. Always get samples and if possible view them in your actual space.
  4. Take your time and don’t rush these critical decisions!

Have you ever had a similar “aha” moment in your home design journey? Or maybe you’re planning a project and hadn’t considered the impact of undertones? I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences in the comments below!
